Nigeria police officers caught in viral video taking money from Chinese nationals to be penalized

Recently a video that has gone viral already popped up online showing a group of Chinese nationals in Nigeria having fun as they lined up our national police force fully armed and in uniform, and handing them money in what appeared to be a coordinated and deliberate exercise.

The footage was posted on a Chinese public platform-WeChart which was later taken down after condemnation and pressure from Nigerians in diaspora community.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday through its Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, condemned the conduct of its officers and said it would sanction its personnel captured in the viral video.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with Acting president, Nigerian in Diaspora organization, China chapter and other Nigerians at home and in the diaspora expressing disappointment and calling for reforms of the Force.

Muyiwa Adejobi, while describing their actions as unprofessional and unethical, harped on the commitment of the Force to upholding professionalism and maintaining public trust.

“The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognisance of a disturbing video making the rounds in the media space, showing police officers receiving money from a Chinese national,” he stated.

“The Force has strongly condemned the conduct exhibited by the police officers in the video, describing it as unprofessional and unethical.

“The actions of the officers do not represent the established ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The officers captured in the video have been identified and subjected to disciplinary proceedings.”

Although he did not disclose the nature of the sanctions, Adejobi assured the public that justice would be served.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby cautions individuals and organisations privileged to the services of police personnel, particularly as escorts and guards or other specialised services, to desist from any act capable of degrading the integrity of its officers and bringing the Force to disrepute,” Adejobi warned.
