“Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured” _ Bobrisky posted in his Instagram handle
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arrested controversial cross dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, at Lagos’s Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
The arrest, which occurred Thursday evening, October 31, came just days after the socialite had been released on bail by Nigerian police authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, Nigerian authorities halted the aircraft just before takeoff and escorted him out in full view of passengers.
Bobrisky, visibly distressed, took to Instagram shortly after, appealing to the public: “Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured.”
This was after a trending video on X showed that he was removed from an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight on Thursday night.
Social commentator Isaac Fayose, the brother of former Ekiti State Governor, on Thursday, shared a photo of himself and Bobrisky on his Instagram handle: “Look who’s on the same flight with me to London, @Bobrisky222.”
Fayose, who has publicly criticised the Nigerian police’s treatment of the crossdresser while confirming the incident, expressed concern over the arrest’s timing.
Recall among the pockets of significant legal and public scrutiny faced in recent times, Bobrisky was detained last week by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Seme border for allegedly trying to flee the country.
This arrest has emboldened ongoing investigations into claims that he paid EFCC officials ₦15 million to drop money laundering charges against him.
The development comes after the Director of Public Affairs, EFCC Wilson Uwajaren, disclosed on Thursday, that the investigation of controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky’s allegations, was ongoing.
Uwujaren while stating the achievements of the commission under Ola Olukoyede, said he could face a fresh charge from the commission if the allegations against the EFCC are false.
Bobrisky had in a voice note shared by controversial social critic Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, allegedly said he bribed EFCC officers with N15m to drop money laundering charges against him.
Although the EFCC denied the allegations, it set up a committee to investigate the matter.
Providing an update, Uwujaren stated that one could be charged for giving false information to the EFCC, let alone making false allegations against the commission.
He said, “There is a portion of the EFCC Act that states if you give false information, you can be tried, but in his case, it is an allegation against the agency. I don’t want to preempt the panel investigating the matter. Once we are through with the investigation, we will definitely brief you on the outcome.”
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky began in April 2024, when he was sentenced to six months in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos for naira abuse.
