NLC issues 7 day strike notice to FG over fuel subsidy notwithstanding court order
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies or face an indefinite nationwide strike from August 2nd.
NLC is particularly concerned with the recent twin increase in the price of petrol from N197 per litre to N617 which has impacted negatively on the economic welbeing of Nigerians.
The Congress says workers nationwide will commence an indefinite strike by next Wednesday should the government fail to heed its call for a policy reversal.
Though a statement from the NLC is still being awaited, the Spokesman of the Congress, Benson Upah, confirmed the resolution of the labour union.
The decision to shut down economic activities nationwide was taken at the National Working Committee meeting of the Congress on Tuesday.
“We issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude all negotiations with labour or face industrial action yesterday by the Central Working Committee,” , Hakeem Ambali, national treasurer of the NLC said.
Recall that following the removal of fuel subsidy, the Federal Government in June dragged the organised labour to court to prevent the unions from embarking on a nationwide strike.
In its ruling, the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Abuja restrained the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC from embarking on strike over the removal of petrol subsidy pending the determination of a suit that was brought before it by the government.
