Nonagenarian quintessence academician passes on at 94
Sir Professor Edet Okon Nkposong has passed at the venerable age of 94 being born on January 10, 1930 to late Rev. Okokon Nkposong. He died on May 24, 2024 after attending his last church service and puffing his final pipe on May 19, 2024.
A devoted Methodist, Prof. Nkposong was alumni of class 1942 at Methodist Boys High School, Oron and a knight of John Wesley (KSW) who graduated with an MBBS at the University College, Ibadan where he studied medicine from 1955 to 1961.
Edet Okon Nkposong, a Professor of Urology was a Fellow of the West African college of Surgeons and Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical college of Nigeria (Surgery) after successfully scaling the fellowship examinations of both the Royal college of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh in May and June, 1966.
He established Nigeria’s First Urology unit in the University of Ibadan between 1969 and 1970 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer surgery in 1973 and Professor Surgery in 1978. He served as a visiting Professor at the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil and the University of Garyounis, Benghazi, Libya. In addition, he was a member of World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Committee investigating male infertility.
And upon return to Nigeria, after serving as Head of Urology services and Chief of Surgical services at Farasan General Hospital, Tizan, Saudi Arabia from 1989 to 1999, he joined the University of Calabar Medical School and extended his services to multiple hospitals in Cross River State.
The nonagenerian bagged several honours including the Citizen Millennium Award and Citizen Golden Jubilee Award from Cross River State government and High Chief Ke-Efik Eburutu by the Obong of Calabar.
According to a press release signed by his eldest Son, Archibong Nkposong, Funeral Service will hold at Methodist church Nigeria, Wesley Cathedral at No: 39 Beecroft Street, Calabar after opening of the mourning House in his country home, No: 33 Edem Street, Calabar and interment afterwards from Tuesday June 25th to Friday June 28th 2024, with service of songs and Evening of Tribunes on Thursday 27th June, 2024.
He is survived by numerous children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren among who is Engr. Bassey Edet Nkposong, Managing Director of Cross River State Basin Development Authority (CRBDA).
