NUT Cross River State Vows to Reposition Education

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Cross River State Wing said it was in a hurry to reposition Education in the state to ensure teachers have hope for a better tomorrow.

Comrade Olayi Gregory, State Chairman (NUT) gave the assurance in his acceptance speech shortly after being peacefully elected during the 22nd (7th) State Quaolrennial at Ikom on Wednesday.

He said that his victory was a divine will of God and would run an inclusive administration to ensure everybody is given opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the union.

Comrade Olayi said “I am aware of the challenges confronting our dear Union and hope to address them as we settle down. I commend you for the trust and confidence bestowed on me and solicit for peace and unity to build a strong and united Union”.

“Today we reaffirm our determination to work with one another across the state to realize the union vision and purpose for the development of the state”.

Earlier, the out-going State Chairman Comrade Ubi Ibiang Onum observed the numerous achievements recorded in the past four years of his administration to include establishment of teachers Multi-Purpose Co-operation Society, which has improved the welfare of teachers.

Others success stories according to Comrade Onum were the re-instatement of teachers and other workers who were dropped from pay roll and re-claiming of land at Big Qua Town.

He however decried the shortage of teachers in the public school system which according to him were caused by retirement, death without corresponding replacement by government.

Comrade Onum noted with dismay that very many teachers were yet to be given computers many month after deductions were completed.

The theme of the Conference was “Restoring The Dignity of Teaching Profession in Nigeria”.
