Nyong Edem street residents commend Governor Otu for construction of neighborhood road, others
Residents of Nyong Edem Street that begins from Mayne Avenue and terminates at Ephraim Street in Calabar South Local Government Area in Cross River State have commended the governor Prince Bassey Otu for awarding contract and personally overseeing the speedy completion of the once deplorable road barely three months of being in office.
A resident of the Area and former legal adviser to Bakassi Local Government Council, Barrister Effiom Effiong made the remark while fielding questions from newsmen on Thursday August 24, 2023 in Calabar.
Barrister Effiong also gave Kudos to the contractor handling the project for the quality materials used and job done saying that the job would be completed on scheduled to warrant its commissioning by the governor as part of his signature project to mark his 100 days in office.
In another development, Youths from Ikot Enebong Community in 8 miles axis of Calabar Municipal Local Government Area blocked the Murtala Muhammed highway on Thursday August 24, 2023 to protest harassment and arrest of commercial motor-cyclists plying the route to convey commuters to their residents.
The youths chanting songs like “WE NO GO GREE” and “ENOUGH OF POLICE INTIMIDATION” called on Governor Bassey Otu to intervene in the incident that has occurred occasioned by the ban of motor-cyclists operating in the area.
Some protesters who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity called-out the government for being insensitive to the hardship faced by commuters to get to their various locations when they alight from vehicles on the highway and blamed the governor for compounding their suffering in this fuel-subsidy removal by stopping operation of commercial motor-cycle activities in the area.
It took the intervention of prominent community leaders and combined team of law enforcement officials to disperse the crowd to allow free flow of traffic on the ever-busy road.
Efforts to get comments from the government side on the issue proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
