Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mike Ozekhome on Monday took a swipe on a number of burning national issues when he appeared on a private national television programme, The Morning Show.
He commented on the just concluded All Progressives Congress National Ward Congresses held at the weekend, to the court proceedings, revelations and twists in the trials of Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho, El-Zakzaky as well as Ramon Abass, popularly called Hushpuppi, with its attendant implications for celebrated Nigerian cop Abba Kyari.
There are concerns that the just concluded ward congresses of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be an exercise in futility given the split decision of the Supreme Court faulting the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led national executive.
Mike Ozekhome said that actions done and authenticated by Buni could be declared null and void if challenged in a competent court.
On Abba Kyari, he said though the case of Abba Kyari is extraditable going by the existing treaty between America and Nigeria, but notwithstanding America cannot just come to Nigeria and extradite Abba Kyari without fulfilling extradictory procedure
Ozakhome who described Sunday Igboho’s case as falling short of extradictory offence said Nigeria has to proof that his case involves money laundering or financial crime for such request to be considered in the first place. He said under extraditory treaty, political, religious, race and related cases are not grounds to extradite a person . Sunday Igboho’s case is on self determination . The requesting country must show that the person in question is not being requested on his/her activities bothering on human rights .
Regarding Nnamdi Kanu, he said the fact that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Malami did not say how he was extradited to Nigeria save collaboration from other countries is suspicious. He referenced the diplomatic bag episode of Umoru Dikko in London stressing that such inhumane method cannot be allowed to be repeated in the 21st century.
And while aligning his position with Femi Falana on El-zazaky’s case, he described the continuous incase ration of El Zazaky and wife as a mere persecution. After six years since 2015, he was finally released with his wife by the judgement of a competent court. But two days before the judgement, the kaduna state government quickly prepared and filled fresh charges to keep them captive. This according to the human right activist is an abuse of court processes and double jeopardy as they cannot be tried on the same offense the second time.
