PDP Chair Ayu steps aside; Iliya Damagum acting, promises to review suspensions Breaking

A Benue High Court has restrained Ayu from parading himself as the national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party.

Iliyah Damagum has taken over as the acting Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, following his suspension.

When asked about the party members’ reactions to the suspension and how the party planned to move forward, Damagum said, “As a party, we are prone to reconciliation. We will review it, we will have an NWC (National Working Committee) meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) and in that meeting we will discuss it, and there will be possible review of whatever is happening.”

Following his suspension at the ward level, Ayu, who was also a member of the National Executive Committee, initially opposed the order given by a Benue High Court that he stops parading himself as party chairman, as he said that only the NEC of the PDP was allowed to mete out discipline on NEC members.

He said, “Article 57(7) of the PDP Constitution as Amended in 2017 expressly prohibits any organ of the party or executive committee of the party at the Ward or State Level from taking any disciplinary measure against any member of the party’s National Executive Committee.”

Ayu then deemed the suspension as an act of futility.

However, he has finally stepped aside as party Chairman, following months of opposition from prominent members of his party.
