Remains of sports editor’s mother interred in Calabar

The remains of late Madam Ekanem Edem Aqua Nee Ekanem Offiong Eniang, mother of the Sports Editor, Nigerian Chronicle. Comrade Isaac Edem Aqua was laid to rest on Saturday, 17 May in Calabar, Cross River State.

It was a celebration of life as she passed on at age 105. Late madam Aqua was born on May 13th 1919 and passed on to glory on October 18th 2024.

The departed was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and family matriarch who left behind many children, step children, daughters in-laws, among who is Mrs. Victoria Aqua, Clerk of Odukpani Legislative Council, Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State.

Funeral service was conducted by The Apostolic church of Nigeria, Ikot Efa District, Ikot Efa Area, Calabar Field assisted by Mount Zion church of Salvation and Redeemed Christian church of God (RCCG) Province 2, Region 29, Cross River State.

In their tributes, the family described her as an impeccable mother who was a guiding light, offering wisdom and support to her family and community and her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched while her memory will continue to inspire them for better versions through the various lives she touches while on earth.

Condolence messages were received from Barr. Ededem Eyoma, Hon. Commissioner Federal Civil Service Commission, Abuja; Rt. Hon. (Ntufam) Eta Mbora, former Member Representing Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency at the National Assembly; Edem Darlington, Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Out; Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, Commissioner for Information, Cross River State; His Excellency Barr. Efiok Cobham, former Deputy Governor of Cross River State; Chief Victor Felix Okon Idem, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Cross River State and Comrade Archibong Bassey, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Cross River State Council.

Dignitaries who congregated at the funeral service include friends and colleagues of children, step children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of the late centenarian among who were members of NUJ, Cross River State Council with other media executives led by Dr. Judex Okoro, Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Calabar who doubles as publisher of The Beagle Newspaper.
