Representative of Yakurr state constituency leads female lawmakers in outreach to trigger more women participation in politics
The member representing Yakurr 2 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mercy Akpama has led outreach for female legislators to promote greater participation of women in politics.
The outreach exercise organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UN-WOMEN and the Government of Canada, was held a few days ago.
The event focused on encouraging greater participation of women in politics and broader societal activities which borders on the critical role women play in community and national development.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of empowering women to play more active roles in governance, stressing how their increased political involvement can drive community transformation at the grass root as well as guarantee a brighter future for Nigeria.
Hon. Akpama in her address, shared her inspiring journey since assuming office as the representative of Yakurr 2 State Constituency, outlining her achievements in the first year which include programs centered on education, social welfare, and economic empowerment. She also revealing other upcoming initiatives aimed at benefiting communities across Cross River State, not limited to her immediate community Nko.
The event also provided a platform for community leaders and citizens to voice their concerns and hopes for the future of Nko and the State, even as youths and women poured out their hearts in gratitude to her for her impactful representation. They, however, requested for additional support for the educational sector.
Hon. Akpama assured the attendees of her commitment to the development of Nko and other communities in her constituency. She pledged to continue advocating for projects that would improve education, infrastructure, and economic opportunities while collaborating with local and national stakeholders to fulfill her promises.
According to the organizers, the event underscored the need for increased female representation in politics and fostered direct engagement between the government and the people, reinforcing Hon. Akpama’s dedication to inclusivity in governance.
The outreach was graced by dignitaries from all spheres of life.
