Reps probe cause(s) of petrol scarcity; “Adulterated fuel depicts quality of APC govt”_Melaye
The House of Representatives on Monday launched an investigation into the cause(s) of petrol scarcity across the country.
The importation of adulterated Premium Motor Spirits into the country has caused scarcity of the product across the country with a litre sold between N250 and N300 in many places.
Meanwhile, Senator Dino Melaye has condemned the recent circulation of adulterated fuel in some parts of the country as he called for full investigation and punishment for those behind it.
Melaye who was in the entourage of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar made the call during a condolence visit to the Ikoyi residence of Senator Ben Murray Bruce over the demise of Mrs. Margaret Murray-Bruce at the weekend.
The outspoken former federal legislator said that it was unfortunate that adulterated fuel could be shipped into the country despite all the quality control mechanisms in place.
“One is appalled that with all our quality control mechanisms, all our quality control measures, we have Standard Organisation of Nigeria, We have the Consumer Protection Council, we have all the retinue of quality control at NNPC, the DPR and so on, then we can still have adulterated fuel imported into this country.”
He noted that a bigger disaster would have occurred if adulterated aviation fuel had entered the country, adding, “What would have happened if adulterated aviation fuel had got into this country. Honestly, it depicts the quality of governance in this country and quality of evaluation and monitoring of activities.”
According to him, what has happened recently is a big shame and it calls for a big sanction. ‘I think by now, heads should roll. There ought to be a categorical statement from the GMD of NNPC even before the president could make a statement,” he said.
