Residents of Ikot Effanga Mkpa E2 Estate protest abandoned World Bank erosion project

The residents of Ikot Effanga Mkpa E2 Estate Community have accused the contractor, Ronn Anderson Nigeria Ltd of abandoning the site for over four months now thereby exposing them to environmental hazards with dire consequences.

This is unlike their Ikot Uduak erosion site project residents who choose to be docile about the adverse effect of the abandoned remediation work by the contractors handling the Cross River State office of the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project “NEWMAP” funded by the World Bank.

The angry residents protested on Saturday carrying placards with some inscriptions insinuating that Mr. Frank Ayade, a sibling of Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State is the owner of the company which according to them search reveal is unregistered.

Speaking to newsmen, Mr. Inyang Umoh said “We are satisfied with the level of work because the place they claimed to have fixed has led to more erosion and is collapsing more than what it was before” which is corroborated by a community leader Mr. Etim Jerome who said the contractors should have left them to their fate rather than coming to aggravate their suffering.

Others like Mr. Abel Ogar and Mary a nursing mother told newsmen that the children have skipped school due to the fact that the link road connecting the E1 & E2 Estate has been washed off because of the erosion created by the abandoned project in the area.

LENS Reporter made effort to reach any of the officials of the Cross River State NEWMAP to get their side of the story but was unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
