Rights activist says vote buying occurs when people believe in a candidate

Constitutional Lawyer, rights activist, and pro-chancellor, chairman governing council for the Adekunle Ajasin University, Dr. Tunji Abayomi speaking about how poverty has become an instrument of manipulation describes the situation as tragic.

According to him, because money is so essential to life, people will go almost to the pit of Hell for that money.

He stated that the country is in a scenario in which the nation’s wealth is being stolen, and the people are becoming poorer and more desperate to obtain the money.

Additionally, he stated that Nigerians must recognise that the country requires a leader who understands the tragedy, the equation of disorder.

Abayomi added that without money, it is difficult to run elections as a modern election is about the use of money.

He said in most cases vote buying is possible because you are willing to sell your vote for a candidate you believe in.

Speaking further, he said determining the best candidates is not based only on interaction during electioneering.

“There is a need to increase interaction as times are changing in order to be assured that the leader can be able to push us into the future”.

Speaking on evolving the electoral system in Nigeria, Dr Abayomi said the agitation and pressure will continue to increase but as it does, we must be ready to continue doing the work.

He added that money will continue to play a role in the electoral process but it will not determine winnability but it will determine affection.
