Road traffic crashes are public health crisis in Nigeria _ FRSC

The Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, says road traffic crashes and fatalities are a public health crisis in Nigeria.

The Corps Marshall disclosed this in his address at the Assembles of God, Akim, Calabar, during a thanksgiving service to mark this year’s World Day Of Remembrance Of Road Accident Victims in the state.

He disclosed that the burden of injuries and fatalities is disastrous, not just to families, but the nation’s economy and humanity.

Road traffic crashes and fatalities are a public health crisis that requires urgent and dedicated action.

“The burden of injuries and fatalities is disastrous to families, the nation’s economy and humanity and is a sad reality for Nigeria and the African continent at large”, he said.

The Corps Marshall, whose address was presented by the Cross River State Sector Commander, Istifanus Andesaba Ibrahim, said road safety is an important factor in human existence.

He assured that the Corps and its stakeholders will keep faith with the global event of remembering accident victims and their survivors.

He added that the thanksgiving service is a symbol of seeking the repose of the victims and also praying for the families left behind.

He called on road users to embrace safe practices while using the road.

The Corps Marshall also called on all to come on board by simply obeying traffic rules, regulations and appreciating the efforts of the Corps.

He also called for evidence-based efforts to reduce road crashes on the roads.

Rev. Philip Philip, the Assistant Pastor of the Assemblies Of God, charged the congregation to embrace the culture of safety while using the roads.

He prayed for the safety of personnel in the course of their service to humanity describing them as people’s husbands, fathers, mothers and loved ones.

This year’s activities puts the spotlight on justice and the thanksgiving was preceded by a weeklong activity comprising visitation to victims of road crashes by ROSAWA, public lectures, Jummat service and others.
