Russia demands guarantee from US over not harming Moscow’s economic ties with Iran

Russia has asked the United States to guarantee that its sanctions against Russia will not harm Moscow’s economic ties with Iran.

Sergey Lavrov Russia’s Foreign Minister said on Saturday that his country is seeking a guarantee from the US that the current process will not impinge on its free full-scale trade, economic, investment, and military-technical cooperation with Iran.

The US and Iran have been holding indirect talks since April to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Russia has been acting as a mediator between the two countries and has been playing a significant role in limiting Iran’s nuclear development.

Washington has slapped severe economic sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview with CBS News on Sunday that the sanctions on Russia have “nothing to do with the Iran nuclear deal and the prospects of getting back into that agreement.”
