SOS: GSTC, PHCC communities Nsemo st., Ikot Ishie wants state government intervention in stagnant pool
Government Science and Technical College students and Staff of Primary Health-Care Centre on Nsemo Street, Ikot Ishie town, Calabar Municipal Local Government Area have called on the Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu to direct the State Ministry of Environment to either sand-fill or open-up the drain for the stagnant pool of water in the school compound behind the health care facility to exit. This according to them would disrupt a possible epidemic outbreak due to mosquito bites from the pond sustained by heavy downpour.
The students who spoke with newsmen on Friday 4th October 2024 on condition of anonymity said aside mosquitoes, noise from toads and frogs in the water-logged area causes distraction during teaching and learning and called for government intervention to avoid outbreak of epidemic in the school.
Speaking in the same vein, a staff of the Primary Health Care centre who simply identified herself as Aunty Nurse said the workers in the health facility barely manage to endure the environmental hazard since the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency has been indifferent notwithstanding that the foundation of the health facility is threatened due to the stagnant pool of water behind it.
LENS Reporter tried speaking with the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Elder Esu Effiong Esu and DG of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency (CRSPHCDA), Dr. Vivien Mesembe Otu to get their views on the development but the effort was nill as at the time of filing this report.
