South Korea strategizing to boost deterrence against North
South Korea plans to establish a “strategic command” to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. The command will oversee the operations of the country’s core military assets to bolster deterrence.
The South Korean defense ministry announced the plan following a meeting of President Yoon Suk-yeol with top commanders on Wednesday.
The South Korean military is building a three-pronged strategy against the North’s missile threats. It consists of preemptive strikes against signs of a launch, interception in the event of a launch, and counterattacks against offensives.
South Korean media reports say that the military aims to set up a strategic command in 2024. The command is expected to oversee the assets of the country’s army, navy, and air force, including fighter jets, missiles, and submarines.
Yoon ordered the military to swiftly punish North Korea if it carries out any provocation.
