Students shut fed secetariat in protest against ongoing ASSU strike

Students coordinated by SUG of UI on Tuesday shut down the Federal Secretariat, located at Ikolaba in Ibadan while protesting against the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The students carried placards with various inscriptions like “education is right, not a privilege”, “I shall want to graduate sha”, “we are tired of staying at home”, and education is a right, it should be free for all” among others

The protesters who converge around 8 am in front of the University of Ibadan (UI) proceeded to the Secretariate, paralyzing activities around the environment.

All roads leading to the Secretariate were also blocked as motorists were forced to take alternative routes.

Speaking with journalists during the protest, the Students Union Government (SUG) President of UI, Adewole Adeyinka stated that over 40,000 students of the institution were forced to stay at home due to the industrial action.

According to him, ‘students are in total support of ASUU because they are the ones fighting for our rights that is why University education should be revitalized.

Other student union leaders express dismay at the government’s negligence of tertiary institutions in the country.
