Super Eagles secures narrow 1-0 win over AFCON host Ivory Coast

The Super Eagles of Nigeria Thursday beat Ivory Coast at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan after a second-half penalty by William Troost-Ekong in the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Victor Osimhen saw the game’s first real chance when he found himself in a good position but he failed to hit the target. Ivory Coast responded with a promising attack of their own but Stanley Nwabili pulled off a decent save.

Ivory Coast had another strong chance in the 15th minute when Christian Kouame played the ball back to Evan Ndicka in a good position in the box but Nwabili denied him.

Nigeria got off to a strong start in the second half and the break came when Ousmane Diomande kicked Osimhen in the back of the leg resulting in a penalty kick after the referee consulted the VAR. Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong converted the penalty volleying a powerful shot straight down the middle for the Super Eagles lone goal.

Ivory Coast had plenty of the ball throughout the second half but could not convert the chances resulting in the narrow defeat which leaves them third in Group A.
