Tinubu commends NASS for approving emergency rule in Rivers by prioritizing security, welfare of citizens

President Bola Tinubu has applauded the National Assembly for its “decisive and patriotic” ratification of the State of Emergency proclamation in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability after months of political turmoil.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, other principal officers, and lawmakers for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers State above partisan interests.

The Senate had on Thursday approved the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State over the protracted crisis.

And after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Tinubu’s request at plenary and Senators emerged from closed door session, Akpabio put the issue to a voice vote and majority supported it.

The Senate President said the red chamber exercised its powers under section 305(2) of the constitution to approve the president’s proclamation.

Earlier, the House of Representatives had voted overwhelmingly in support of the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

President Tinubu further acknowledged the lawmakers’ diligent review of classified security briefings, underscoring the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” the President stated.

The National Assembly’s approval followed a detailed review of classified security briefings, which, according to Tinubu, underscored the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation.

“As I detailed in my address to the nation on 18 March, the near-total collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation. This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability”, he said.

The emergency rule, set for six months, empowers the newly appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize Rivers State, address governance breakdowns, and mediate between conflicting political factions.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to ensure peace, economic resilience, and development nationwide.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders,” he said.

“We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured.”
