Toyota halts operation due to failure in production system

Japan auto-giant Toyota Motor corporation has halted operations at 12 plants in Japan due to a system failure, the cause of which is under investigation. The company said it does not believe the issue is related to a cyberattack.

The suspension will be extended to two more facilities from Tuesday, meaning all of the automaker’s domestic factories have been affected.

Officials of the company said a timeline has not been set for the resumption of production but by Tuesday the company will decide how it will proceed in the coming days.

Toyota said a malfunction in the production system has made it impossible to order components.

Recall last year March Toyota halted domestic plant operations at all of its domestic plants after one of its suppliers was targeted by a cyberattack.

But company officials said that as at the moment, they do not believe the current issue was caused by a similar attack.

Fewer people than usual were visible around Toyota Motor’s Motomachi Plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture.

A man working for one of Toyota’s business partners who visited the factory on Tuesday said that Toyota informed him of the suspension on Monday night. He also said that he is waiting for more information from the company.
