Trump says Putin not ready to end Ukraine war _ WSJ report

The Wall Street Journal reports that President Donald Trump told European leaders Russian President Vladimir Putin is not ready to end the Ukraine war because he thinks he is winning.

The major US newspaper broke the news on Wednesday, citing three sources.

It says Trump made the comment during a call on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders. Trump had spoken with Putin by phone earlier in the day.

After the Trump-Putin call, the US leader hinted at the possibility that Washington may stop mediating between Moscow and Kyiv.

Putin did not agree to an immediate ceasefire during the talks. But he later said Russia is ready to work with Ukraine on a memorandum on a potential future peace treaty.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that work on such a memorandum is progressing. He said Moscow will also prepare a list of conditions for a ceasefire.

Analysts say Russia seems ready to continue its invasion of Ukraine while showing a positive attitude toward a ceasefire.
