Ugep monarch confers Obol Okamke 1 of Ugep on Cross River State environment commissioner
As a precursor to the 2025 Annual Leboku New Yam Festival celebrated by Ugep Nation on August 15, 2025, Hon. Moses Osogi, the Cross River State Commissioner for Environment and Deputy Chair, Nigerian Environment Commissioners was conferred the prestigious chieftaincy title of Obol Okamke 1 of Ugep.
The colorful ceremony spiced with traditional dances and displays was given by Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, Obol Dr. Ofem Ubana Eteng. Some of the high-profile guests that graced the event were a representative of the Governor, Pst. Ekpenyong Ene Cobham, Commissioner for Transportation, Chairman of Abi Local Government Area Hon. Egbala Bassey, officials of the State government, scholars and other dignitaries.
The title according to organizers was awarded to him for his outstanding work in serving people and building communities. He has shown true dedication to humanity, helping not just the people of Yakurr and Abi Local Government Areas, but the whole State. His effort in development and welfare have touched many lives, making him a role model. This honor celebrates his hard work and meant to inspires others to follow in his footsteps.
The occasion drew a vibrant crowd of multiple cultural groups that energized the arena and tradition came alive. Among the dance groups that showcased artistry was Ima Love Dance Group from Ediba, Attitude Boys from Adadama, Ikpobi Cultural Dance Group and Ayoro Cultural Dance Group all from Anong in Abi Local Government Area. Also present were the Utal Cultural Dance Group from Nko in Yakurr and the Ugep Urban Development Authority (UUDA). Organizations and agencies joined in creating a lively mix of music, dance, and choreography that spiced the event.
In his acceptance speech, Honorable Osogi expressed joy and gratitude for being counted worthy of such an honor by the people of Ugep. He noted that the recognition elicits greater responsibilities and expectations. He promised to uphold the responsibilities and cultural significance associated with the title. His words reflected humility and resolve, assuring everyone that he will keep serving with even greater passion.

The Leboku New Yam Festival has over the years carved a niche for itself in the State Tourism Calendar which resonates with the Carnival Calabar fiesta adjudged the biggest street party in Africa attracting scores of tourists globally to Cross River State.
