UNIUYO clinical lecturers object exclusion from vice chancellor race
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) branch has objected the exclusion of Clinical Lecturers/Professors from the race for the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo.
In a letter addressed to the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, the Association cited discriminatory criteria in the publication for the position, which they claim favor some sections of the University Community.
The criteria include requiring a PhD degree, which excludes Clinical Lecturers who become professors through the Medical Fellowship programme.
Additionally, the requirement of ten research publications within two years is seen as unrealistic for Clinical Lecturers, who face ethical considerations and approvals before conducting research on humans.
The Association also notes that the twenty years of continuous undisrupted teaching requirement is not known to the Federal Government and discriminates against Clinical Lecturers who have gained experience through sabbatical leave, study leave, and secondment duties.
They are appealing to the Pro-chancellor to address these discriminatory policies within two weeks to avoid industrial action.
