US approves arms sales worth $825m to Ukraine

United States Thursday announced the approval of an $825 million arms deal to supply Ukraine with 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munitions (ERAM) air-launched missiles and associated equipment.

A statement from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), says Ukraine will fund the purchase using financial support from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, along with a U.S. loan guarantee.

“This proposed sale will enhance Ukraine’s ability to counter current and future threats by strengthening its capacity for self-defense and regional security missions,” the DSCA noted.

The agency also emphasized that the transaction “supports U.S. foreign policy and national security goals by bolstering the defense capabilities of a partner nation that contributes to political stability and economic progress in Europe.”

The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale, while the DSCA has formally notified Congress, which must still authorize the deal.
