US Capitol January 6, 2021 rioters released from Washington DC facility

Appreciative number of convicted and jailed persons for their involvement in the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 were released from a facility in Washington DC on Wednesday.

The release comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, the day of his inauguration, to grant pardons to about 1,500 supporters who were convicted or charged for their part in the violence.

Recall before inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump had promised pardons for those who stormed the Capitol four years ago to try to disrupt the certification of President Biden’s election win.

Reuters news agency reported that as of Tuesday, more than 200 people had been freed from federal facilities across the country.

A crowd of Trump supporters were seen gathered in front of the facility to welcome the pardoned prisoners as they emerged.

One woman protesting the release held up a sign with the name of a police officer who died responding to the mob.

She called the attack on the Capitol “a crime of treason against our nation and … against our democracy and all the principles and values that America has or used to have.”

She added that “what I’ve seen happening with Trump is horrible. He’s going to ruin our nation.”

A survey by Reuters and research firm Ipsos found some 58 percent of respondents oppose the pardons.
