US volunteer soldier says Ukraine needs to defeat Russia on battlefield
The Ukrainian government is calling on foreign citizens to join in the effort to fend off Russia’s invasion of the country.
The Ukrainian embassy in the United States says it has received about 3,000 inquiries about volunteering to fight for Ukraine.
Former US soldier Carl Larson served in the Iraq War, which began in 2003. He and three fellow volunteers arranged their own flights and accommodation, and are now in the southern Polish city of Krakow. They hope to enter Ukraine on Tuesday.
Larson spoke to NHK in an online interview on Monday.
Referring to one of the actions carried out by Russian forces in Ukraine, he said, “attacking a nuclear power plant with artillery and infantry is a crime against humanity.”
He went on to say, “the only way this conflict will end is if Ukrainians are able to defeat Russians on the battlefield” and stressed the importance of paving “the way for more volunteers from many countries.”
