Uyo residents groan as flood submerges part of metropolis, government appeals for calm

Residents of uyo have cried out for help as flood arising from torrential rainfall submerges major streets in the metropolis.

Most affected areas in Uyo urban ravaged by flood from last weekend heavy downpour are Idoro road by Julius Berger junction, Atiku Abubakar way, Ikot Oku Ikono, Ukana Offot street and Udo Umanah streets axis of the state, among others.

Speaking with our Correspondent in the affected areas, one of the victims Mr. Udimisor who is a landlord in one of the adjoining streets by Stadium road closed to Julius Berger junction along Idoro road said during the heavy downpour last Saturday his compound was submerged while all the rooms in the building were flooded.

” I live in this compound in the last 5 years and I have not experienced this kind of flood before. The rain started at about 9 am and lasted for 7 hours. The entrance to my compound turned to a river as nobody could either come in or moved out … we were trapped for hours ”

Another neighbour Mr. Ifiok Elijah Ezekiel Udo said the same water damaged the back fence of his compound and collapsed the soakaway.

” The water came in a speed and collapsed the fence at my backyard. Now I need more than N200,000 to restore the fence and fix the soakaway system ” he said

Residents of Udo Umanah and other streets in the environ had similar experiences as the entrance of the summit complex hotel and the surroundings were completely submerged.

In a telephone interview, the state commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr. Charles Udoh said drainage controlled projects are ongoing in the state but the spots mentioned are not included.

” I am not informed of this axis being ravaged by flood. Once I have an official report from them, the government would act accordingly” he said.
