Yobe north Senatorial Elections: Supreme Court affirms Lawan APC senatorial candidate; Lawan commends judiciary, party for victory
Nigeria’s supreme court has affirmed Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Yobe north.
In a majority judgment delivered today, the apex court allowed the appeal filed by the APC against Bashir Machina’s candidature.
Delivering the judgment, three out of a five-member panel agreed with the position of the APC that the suit at the trial court ought not to have commenced via an originating summons since it contained allegations of fraud.
The APC assisted victory for Lawan at the apex court over his opponent, Machina insisting that Lawan, who didn’t contest at the primary poll, was its “authentic candidate” has provided a soft landing for the Senate President.
Meanwhile, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has commended the judiciary for strengthening democracy, stating that the ruling in his favour, showed that “democracy was at work.”
Lawan appreciated his political party for fighting tooth and nail for his victory while re-echoing his support for the party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima
