2023 Elections: Eze Ndigbo in Cross River kicks against plot to deny southeast presidency

Leader of the Igbo race and head of the third-largest ethnic group in Nigeria Eze (Sir.) Emmanuel Ezewenyi on Monday likened the plot by the two major political parties to open the ticket for all candidates from the six geopolitical regions in the 2023 elections as shifting the goal-post to deny Igbo’s the right to occupy the top office in 2023.

Ezewenyi made the remark in a press conference with newsmen at his palace in Calabar saying that the south-west and south-south had enjoyed this privilege with President Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan and wondered why the southeast should not be accorded the chance to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in the spirit of equity and fair play to promote inclusiveness.

The business mogul dismissed insinuations in some quarters that an Igbo presidency would split the country or create the Biafra Republic as a misconception since this is not possible as Ndigbos are in Delta and parts of Rivers State.

He used the occasion to call on the two major political parties to rethink their choice of Presidential candidates in order to rustle votes in the southeast as there are credible and competent candidates of Igbo extraction.

He berated the borrowing syndrome by governments saying it will put the future generations of Nigerians in perpetual bondage. In his word,’ we should shift the narrative from a consumption economy to a productive system to achieve all-round emancipation and progress’.

He suggested applying a political solution to settling the lingering call for restructuring of the country to end terrorism, banditry, and other vices in the polity.

In addition, he calls for the inclusion of ethnic minorities who feel marginalized in national government and requests for the revamping of the eastern rail route network for easy transportation of goods and people.

He appealed as well for the restoration of electricity to Calabar and its environs which have been in darkness for over a month now.
