ASUU NEC extends strike over unresolved issues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has extended its ongoing strike, after a series of serious discussions.
This development follows the National Executive Council meeting at the headquarters of the union at the University of Abuja on Monday.
As a build-up to the decision, it was gathered that there was a heated argument and that the union could not agree either to resume or forbear.
The union’s leadership had called a special National Executive Council meeting to review the strike after most of its branches voted for an indefinite boycott of classrooms at their congresses last week.
The congresses okayed an indefinite strike following the government’s insistence on a no-work, no-pay policy.
Apart from seeking payment of the salaries of its members for the strike period, ASUU is demanding the provision of funds for the revitalisation of public universities; payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)/Earned Allowances (EA); payment of salary shortfalls; an end to the proliferation of state universities, renegotiation of a 2009 agreement; adoption of University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment platform for university teachers and payment of non-remitted check-off dues.
