Colorado primary ballot ban: Trump appeals ruling to Supreme Court

US former President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a court ruling in Colorado that removes him from the primary ballot in the western state in this year’s presidential election.

Trump filed an appeal on Wednesday against the decision by the Colorado Supreme Court.

The Colorado court ruled in December that Trump had engaged in insurrection by inciting his supporters to attack the US Capitol in 2021.

The court said the decision is based on a clause in the US Constitution, that bars any person “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding office, and that Trump is ineligible to appear on Colorado’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.

Trump’s camp has denied his involvement in the Capitol attack. His lawyers argue that the so-called insurgency clause does not apply to US presidents.

Following Trump’s appeal, the Colorado court ruling has been temporarily suspended until the nation’s top court makes a decision.

Similar cases seeking to disqualify Trump from the presidential ballot have been filed in more than half of US states, with proceedings underway in several states.
