Jungle justice resurfaces in Calabar as 3 suspected robbers burnt
In what would appear as a society going back to the early days of jungle justice to settle disputes, some aggrieved residents in Calabar the Cross River State capital have resorted to taking laws into their hands by burning three suspected armed robbers simultaneously in multiple locations of Calabar South and Calabar Municipality on Saturday, April 30.
Two of the suspected criminals are said to rob a residential building that was set ablaze at Mayne Avenue by Azikiwe Street opposite Hart Street in Calabar South L.G.A. The lone incident occurred at the Ikot Ansa community in Calabar Municipality where the suspect was set ablaze by a vigilante group.
A member of the community watch who spoke to a LENS reporter on condition of anonymity said they had to take extreme action to serve as a deterrent to arm robbers as intervention by security operatives only come after the deed has been done and even when caught and handed over to the police for prosecution, they are soon released after a compromise.
Efforts to get a comment from the relevant security agency on the matter were not feasible at the time of filing this report.
