Kano Court orders Police to remove dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero from palace as Yusuf ordered his arrest; Army clarifies role
A Kano State High Court has stopped Aminu Bayero from parading himself as the Emir of Kano.
The court also instructed the Police to remove the dethroned Emir from Nassarawa royal residence where he has been staying after Emir Muhammad Sanusi moved into the main Kano palace.
Earlier, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for creating tension in the state.
The former Emir was reported to have been smuggled into Kano city Friday night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by Yusuf.
In a statement issued by Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson to the Governor, it was confirmed that the new Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, arrived at the palace in the company of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, and other top government functionaries at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, 25th May 2024.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys”.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has denied any involvement in the Kano State emirate tussle.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Sunday said the Army had no involvement in the tussle and its personnel were not involved in enforcing any court order.
He said contrary to insinuations by the Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association “troops of the Nigerian Army have not been involved in the Kano State emirate tussle and are not involved in enforcing any court order. ”
He noted that the service steps taken were to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
Onyema said, “They have only taken proactive steps to checkmate any possible breakdown or breach of the security that may be occasioned by the Kano Emirship tussle.
He noted that the military would wade into the matter when the police could no longer handle the security situation in the state.
Baba Dantiye, the Kano State commissioner for information in a statement released Monday said that contrary to what he described as misleading information being propagated by some sections of the media alleging violent protests in some parts of the state regarding the recent abrogation of the four emirates and reinstatement of His Highness, Muhammadu Sunusi II as the Emir of Kano, Kano has remained peaceful.
“While the government is aware of isolated incidents in a few areas by a handful of small children and hired miscreants and thugs, these do not in any way reflect the overall situation. “These hired unpatriotic individuals were only aiming to destabilize the state for the personal gain and selfish interests of their paymasters. “The great majority of Kano state’s citizens have shown remarkable restraints and understanding of the sincere action of the state government.
“It also behoves to reiterate that the decision by the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf to legally abrogate the emirates and reinstate the 14th Emir of Kano State was made after careful consideration of the best interests of the state.
