President Trump files defamation litigation against The New York Times

Donald Trump the US President has sued The New York Times in his latest legal action against the news media.

The suit was filed on Monday with a court in the state of Florida. He claims he was defamed by the paper’s articles and is demanding 15 billion dollars in damages.

Trump is taking issue with the endorsement of Democrat Kamala Harris by the Times’ editorial board just before the 2024 presidential election.

He argues in the complaint that the Times is a “full throated mouthpiece” of the Democrats. He says the paper’s “editorial routine is now one of industrial-scale defamation and libel against political opponents.”

The complaint goes on to say that “The Times has become a leading, and unapologetic, purveyor of falsehoods against President Trump.”

The New York Times has commented: “This lawsuit has no merit. It lacks any legitimate legal claims and instead is an attempt to stifle and discourage independent reporting.” The paper says it “will not be deterred by intimidation tactics.”

Trump has filed a series of lawsuits against media outlets. In July, he filed a 10 billion-dollar damages suit against the parent firm of The Wall Street Journal over one of the paper’s articles.
