Protest in Abeokuta over scacity of new Naira notes
A protest broke out in Abeokuta the Ogun State capital on Tuesday when residents poured into the roads and streets over biting scarcity of cash and the attendant impact on the living condition of residents.
The action according to some of the participants who spoke to the media is to express their displeasure over the continuous scarcity of the new naira notes and petrol.
They blocked major roads, and set up burn fire in front of banks and other strategic locations in the state capital.
The angry residents who were unable to withdraw cash from banks to attend to their daily needs attacked banks and block major roads even as the end of 10 days extension of the deadline was given to Nigerians to return old Naira notes and get the new ones near.
Some of the protesters say they have deposited all the old naira notes with banks but are unable to get new notes to take care of their families. They describe the situation as unbearable.
While trying to prevent the breakdown of law and order, the state police command dispatched his men to bring the situation under control and people were seen walking with their hands up and vehicles moving with leaves on their windscreens signifying solidarity.
Although, there were reports on Social media that someone was shot in the process the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi said he is not aware of that and that the Police has been able to prevent a major breakdown of law and order and advised residents to be peaceful.
Oyeyemi said the person in question is alive and recuperating from the gunshot injury
