Ukraine Invation: Russia attacks Kyiv as Ukraine regains half of Severodonetsk
As fierce fighting continues in Ukraine, with Russian forces carrying out missile attacks in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. In the key eastern city of Severodonetsk, they have met fierce resistance.
The Ukrainian military and other sources say Russian bombers fired five cruise missiles in Kyiv on Sunday. They say four of the missiles hit a repair factory for rail cars, leaving one worker wounded.
Ukrainian authorities showed the media the site where they say the missiles landed. Footage shows heavy damage to the exterior of a building and its roof. Part of the structure was still on fire, and the area was scattered with debris.
Meanwhile, battles are continuing in the city of Severodonetsk in the eastern region of Luhansk.
Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said on social media on Sunday that Russian forces had previously seized 70 percent of the city. He said they have been repelled in the last two days, and Ukraine has regained control of 50 percent of the city.
Ukraine mounted a counter-attack in Sievierodonetsk after days of retreating from the city, saying it took the Russian troops by surprise.
After recapturing a large portion of the key industrial city in the Donbas, Ukrainian forces were now in control of half of it and continuing to push the Russians back.
Britain’s Defense Ministry said in its intelligence updates that Russian forces in the Luhansk region include “poorly equipped and trained” personnel mobilized from Russian-led separatist forces.
It says Ukrainian forces have likely blunted Russia’s “operational momentum.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that he had visited a city adjacent to Severodonetsk and other areas.
He posted a video on social media showing himself speaking to military commanders and posing for photographs with soldiers. He said he was proud of everyone he had met.
Ukraine’s military is being helped by state-of-the-art weapons from Western nations. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Russian state-run TV on Sunday that the weapons are short-ranged and not a threat.
But Putin also said Russia will strike fresh targets if long-range missiles are supplied to Ukraine. He added that Russia has ample weapons of destruction.
