Kenya’s fifth president Ruto sworn in
Dr. William Samoei Ruto was on Tuesday sworn in as Kenya’s fifth Head of State.
Ruto took the oath of office at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi on September 13, 2022, an event witnessed by over 20 other Heads of State.
He was sworn in by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, in the presence of Chief Justice Martha Koome.
The 55-year-old took the oath of office on a copy of Kenya‘s constitution, a week after the Supreme Court upheld one of the most closely contested elections in the country’s history.
Ruto, who served as deputy president for the past 10 years, succeeds Uhuru Kenyatta as president. Ruto had a bitter split with Kenyatta that left the two not speaking for months at a time. But on Monday Kenyatta publicly congratulated Ruto for the first time on his win.
“You will be president not just for those who voted for you but for all Kenyans,” he said.
Ruto takes power at a time of surging food and fuel prices, high unemployment and rising public debt.
